In elderly patients battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (P), how does daily pulmonary rehabilitation program use (I) compared with no rehabilitation intervention approach (C) affect the hospital admission rate (O) within six months (T)?
Review of the Literature
Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has been studied extensively in terms of its effects on the symptoms of COPD. Cox et al. (2021) analyzed early home-based pulmonary rehabilitation among community residents with COPD after hospitalization. The scholars indicated that the intervention helped reduce the hospitalization rate due to patients’ decline in health status or even worsening of COPD (Cox et al., 2021). However, Dong et al. (2020) evaluated the impact of PR in improving the health of COPD patients. The patients portrayed positive changes in their overall health and physical and psychological well-being, as well as their past health documentation before admission and reduced hospitalization.
However, Ibrahim et al. (2019) included in-hospital and post-PR regarding chronic respiratory disease exacerbation. The scholars concluded their assertion that postoperative pulmonary rehabilitation at the earliest possible time efficiently reduces the admittance and mortality common to COPD patients. Tonga and Oliver (2023) proved that PR improved an individual’s position, the number of admissions, and health conditions. This enhancement points out the importance of including the PR variable in the peripheral management approaches utilized in the case of COPD (Tonga & Oliver, 2023). These observations pointed out the necessity of the following research to compare the cost savings of daily PR when delivered longer to the hospitalization rates among elderly patients with COPD.
