Now that you have explored the health care professional shortages in the United States, your group will use that information to inform the solution to a consulting case.

Background

  • Setting
    • Your talent management consultant team (your group) has been brought in to help The Lion Health Care (LHC) System stand up a new set of services.
    • Your team will provide a proposal/action plan for what the human resource department and executive team will need to consider when planning human capital needs for this new integrated health care system.
    • You do not have every piece of information you need and will need to make some logical assumptions (just tell me what they are).
    • This will be a preliminary report and not an in-depth final report.
    • You are providing generalized recommendations and information in an executive summary format.
  • Background
    • There will be an administrator at every facility.
    • Each student should choose the type of facility they know the least about.
    • FACILITY TYPES: The integrated system will include:
      • A 30 room, urban urgent care clinic that will be staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
      • A suburban physician practice with primary, oncology, gerontology, and orthopedic care. You will be looking for primary care physicians, oncologists, and medical technicians.
      • A 60 bed, rural, long term care facility that has its own physical and occupational therapy rehabilitation department. It will be staffed with licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and certified nursing assistants.
      • An outpatient lab that will provide basic and advanced lab and radiology services staffed by lab technicians, radiology and ultrasound technicians, and radiologists.
      • An outpatient surgery center staffed with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, staff assistants, and medical records.
      • An Inpatient and outpatient mental health facility – staffed by board-certified psychiatrists, psychologist, and nursing staff

Notes:

  • Solutions must be innovative
  • Solutions must be benchmarked if not original and if original must have best practice backing – all cited.
  • Each member of the group should select the facility they know the least about and be the main researcher for that facility.
  • Members are encouraged to share information they may have about any of the facilities.
  • The purpose is to broaden your knowledge about other types of facilities, professionals, professional associations, and specific human capital needs.

  1. Produce an executive summary.
  2. Report Requirements
    • Provide the following information for each type of facility listed above.
      • The group will provide LHC with a report that outlines the following for each facility listed above.
      • Each group member will complete the following information for the facility they are researching but the group will pull it all together and submit:
        • Executive Summary (Group): provide the context, set the scene for the workforce outlook for the particular facility – cite statistics
        • For Each Facility
          • Top Three Employment Staffing issues (for each facility): What will the health system face as they look to staff the proposed facilities. Provide data to back it up.
          • Professional Associations (for each facility): Provide suggestions for what professional associations they could connect with to recruit these groups of professionals – describe them briefly.
          • Special Considerations (for each facility): Include in your suggestions any specific considerations that come from geographic location, type of facility, and type of professional sought – issues with recruiting the staff needed
          • Summary of Recommendations (Group): Sum up what you have shared and point the executives to what the next steps will be for each facility
    • Resources
      • At a minimum students should utilize and apply the readings for this lesson as well as 2 to 3 additional sources (per student) to support your assertions and solutions.
      • You may access any additional resources to locate best practices from within healthcare and from other industries.
    • Paper Outline and Specifications
      • Use bullets and numbers, no need for paragraphs – make it VERY readable, easy to follow, professional, free from errors
      • Limit to 2 pages per facility. Executive Summary is limited to one page
      • APA in-text and references list (identify who brought in each resource)
