A character sketch is like an in-depth description. Sort of the way police men have to have a ‘criminal profile’ for the people they are hunting, that way they recognize them in public.

Step 1: Chaucer’s Characters
In Step 1, you will choose 5 characters from Chaucer’s prologue and write a character sketch for each of them.  What is a character sketch? A character sketch is like an in-depth description. Sort of the way police men have to have a ‘criminal profile’ for the people they are hunting, that way they recognize them in public. They collect facts, evidence and even a picture of the person and keep it handy. Well, for this part of the project, you are going to use evidence (quotes from Chaucer’s indirect characterization in describing each pilgrim) to describe each character. Look for details in the reading that help you describe the whole person, not just what they look like but their inner character, too.  Each character sketch should be around 100-150 words.  When you tell me about the character’s clothes, do so in a way that helps me understand his inner person, personality or motives in the story. When you click start, you will get 5 prompts. You choose one character per prompt. For example,  on #1 I might pick “The Prioress”. For #2 I might pick “The Monk”. For #3 I might pick “The Skipper”….etc. Once I know who I want to write about, I’ll go to the story and search for details (text-based evidence) about those characters so that I can write a good ‘sketch’ (in-depth description) of the character. Here are the Prompts. Choose one character per prompt. 1    The Knight    The Squire    The Yoeman    The Prioress    2    The Priest    The Monk    The Friar    The Merchant    3    The Student    The Lawyer    The Franklin    The Guildsmen    The Skipper
4    The Physician    The Wife of Bath    The Parson    The Plowman    5    The Miller    The Manciple    The Reeve    The Summoner    The Pardoner
Step 2: Create your own modern character
This is fun! Let your imagination fly! Choose 2 of your 5 character sketches to ‘modernize’.  What would they be like if they lived today? They should have the character traits as two of Chaucer’s characters with a modern-day twist.  For example: The monk had bells on his horse that jingled as he rode; what would the modern day “monk” have instead?  Your character would not be called a monk; make him modern.  Each of your two sketches should be between 150-250 words.
