In the post- Civil War three constitutional amendments were passed in an effort to establish equality between
blacks and whites. By the turn of the century little had changed for African-Americans in spite of this legislation.
Two African-Americans, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois, became the spokesmen for AfricanAmericans on the way to achieve racial equality espousing two radically different approaches to attain equality.
As you read their documents focus on how each man suggests the best plan for African-American equality in
American society.
