Coming from the oil and gas industry I would say that no management does not know how the processes of the company work. Most management in a refinery has never been on the operation side of things so they have no idea how it feels to work shift work. They implement new sick day policies without ever asking the ones that it affects and the rules they put into place show that they have no idea how that side of the company operates. You do not have to be an operator to become management in a refinery because most management comes from the engineering side. They have no clue how to get equipment ready for maintenance and the steps that it takes to get the job done successfully. A big hurdle to overcome is management wanting permits out by a certain time but not knowing what all goes into writing a good permit and doing a thorough joint job site visit that goes over all the hazards with the contractors. Yes, they know about the hazards but they have never written a permit to know that it can’t simply be pushed out at certain times during the day because each permit is different and may require additional paperwork to go along with it. I have had this discussion with several people that management should have to come down and see life through an operator because I truly believe they would be shocked at how different it really is. It makes for its challenges because unlike most jobs you start at the bottom and work your way up and you get to experience all the different levels and what it takes to get those jobs done successfully. It would also be beneficial for management to work shift work for a month so they can have a better understanding of why that operator sometimes nods off for a couple of minutes throughout the day. Operators do not just make money, cook, and watch movies.

I believe management knows how the company’s processes work. I work for great company in fact this is the happiest I have ever been while working for a company. The reason happiness run throughout the company is because our management teams understand the processes. We have an open-door policy like most companies, but at any time or day of the week the managers and the owners will answer your call and discuss any matter with you. The processes that my company has in place we are trained on the process and uploaded in a company cloud where we can go back and look at the process. I want to share a story about an experience I had with my manager two months ago, the job I was assigned to oversee was a two-hour drive from my residence and I told my manager how tired I was, and he added another check to my salary to cover expenses including a hotel stay. This became a new process because in the past the requirement for travel expenses from the location of the corporate office and not the employee’s residence. My company believes that when employees are happy and is involved with the process, we are happier as a team. When we assigned to a project every Tuesday at 12:00 we have a lunch and learn on Teams. At this time, we discuss topics of our processes that usually ends in a test. When the company’s processes are discussed, we have an open platform to add experiences or ideas for the process. We then add the flowcharts or diagrams to the cloud for review when we need a refresher.
