The paper should be three pages in length, double-spaced. Use an MLA
heading in the upper left corner (your name, my name, course, and date).
● Give your essay a title that hints at your topic (i.e. Latinx Identity in
“Drowned” or Aesthetic Pain in Plath etc.).
● Avoid using “I.” The paper should be written in third-person objective voice (if
you need to draft with “I,” okay, but try to eliminate on revision: I think
Kincaid’s girl suggests a barrage of social rules for women).
● Use present tense for literary analysis (Haden uses a polyphonic voice not Hayden
used a polyphonic voice).
● For parenthetical citations, you should reference the author and page the first
time, but you need not repeat the author’s last name if you are using a consecutive
source. For example, “Though no one could say whether the woman had hollered
from anger or pain” (Cisneros 1616) on first reference. Subsequent quotes would
be formatted as “The first time she had been so surprised she didn’t cry out or try
to defend herself” (1617). When no author is provided, it is understood that the
page reference corresponds to the previously-mentioned source.
