Complete an analysis of Anzaldua’s arguments, in her book, “Borderlands/La Frontera: The New
Mestiza that are centered on border, feminism, and queer theory.Feel free to use your past discussion
submissions as a starting point as these will inevitably further guide your understanding of her writing. In your
paper, you will touch on the following points. Ensure that you provide evidence from within our central text. The
following applies to what we covered in our readings and subsequent discussions since we did not read the
book in its entirety. You will pretend you are explaining Anzaldua’s theory piece to a friend who is not familiar
with her work. That is, why does Anzaldua’s work transcend, even after more than thirty years after its
publication? Though you are addressing it to a friend, you DO NOT have to utilize letter formatting other than a
simple greeting at the beginning and a farewell at the end.
Some examples that our weekly discussions have focused on are:
Among many elements, Anzaldua’s work highlights the importance and relevancy of the new mestiza
conciousness, an effort to fight historical oppression experienced by Chicanas. How does Anzaldua explain the
need for the new mestiza conciousness. How does Anzaldua convey feminism?
Nepantla (or state of in-betweeness) and intersectionality. This is also in relation to border culture.
Language… think of our very first discussion on the chapter: “How to Tame a Wild Tongue.” How does
Anzaldua explain the different types of Spanish? What does she say about the illegitimate tongue? What about
the dominant discourse?
Did the historical overviews that Anzaldua gives in some of these chapters help with your understanding of her
overarching message? If yes, how so?
How did you connect the creative pieces at the end of the book to the ones focused on theory?
