A Book Review is intended to help students gather usable material from their sources. If the student chooses their research paper topic early enough, they build upon their paper by targeting the review to support the final paper (though students can use a book on a different topic, so long as it is not the class text and it must be relevant to the class). Book reviews are more than a book report—they are intended to be a brief informational about the book.
Students should include the following information about the book they are reviewing: a brief summarization of the book, reflection of the author’s general purpose and viewpoints, personal assessment of the book (avoid using 1st and 2nd person), author’s objective/thesis and whether the author met his objective/thesis, strengths and weaknesses of the book, any additional helpful information (maps, appendix included?), and the evidence the author used to write the book and reach the conclusion.
This book review is a minimum of three full pages of double-spaced text. Bibliographies and citations will be in the Chicago-style format (use endnotes or footnotes). Students may not use Wikipedia or other online encyclopedias. Students need to use Times New Roman, 12 point font, and 1 inch margins.
