Semester 2, 2019-20
Individual Assignment
Individual Assignment: (40%)
The individual assignment is an individual written 2,000 word report, in which
students are expected to apply theoretical and analytical frameworks as a basis
for critical reflection on personal experiences of, and dilemmas faced in,
contemporary management and organizations. Students may choose their own
topic, in order that they are able to reflect on their own experience. Typical topics
might be in one of the following areas: technology and environment, strategy,
change, working with diversity and across cultures, leadership, organizational
structure, learning, innovation e.g. open innovation, social innovation, team
working, gender and management, social media and networking.
A couple of things to bear in mind:
1. This module is called ‘Contemporary Issues in Management’. Your focus
must then be on ‘Issues’ that are ‘Contemporary’ and have to do with
‘Management’ and/or ‘Leadership’.
2. You are supposed to reflect on your own experience:
a. If you have been a manager, this should present no problems
b. If you have not been a manager, but do have work experience, you
should be able to find a topic that you can discuss from the
perspective of an employee.
c. If you have neither been a manager nor an employee in an
organization, then you need to take a more theoretical approach.
Choose, an interesting new theory in an area, discuss and evaluate
the theory, and make sure that you discuss in general terms how this
new theory might impact on organizations, their managers, and their
employees.
3. Don’t forget to apply theoretical frameworks. Try to avoid going back to
literature prior to 2017, unless you are examining old theories (about, for
example, team roles) in a new context (e.g. virtual teams, or customer
communities.
