applying theories of learning/cognitive development of children

This paper focuses on two theories of learning, constructivism (Piaget) and sociocultural learning theory (Vygotsky). You will use both of these theories to analyze children’s learning as depicted in a twenty-minute video of a first-grade classroom. I have included many optional resources on both of these theories if you need support on what they are about.
1. Watch the video. You will probably want to watch the video two times as follows:
First: watch the video one time through looking for interesting moments of student learning. Take notes so that you can eventually choose two learning moments that you’d like to analyze in your paper.
Second: watch the video again looking specifically for examples of constructivism (children constructing their own understanding of something by drawing on prior knowledge, discussion, experimenting etc.) and examples of sociocultural learning theory (children learning with scaffolding, through collaboration, or by interacting with oral and written language)?
2. After watching the video twice through, select one learning moment you can analyze using constructivism and one learning moment you can analyze using sociocultural learning theory. A learning moment can be quite short or quite long. It may be a brief class discussion or the entire car accident exploration or the moment when the boy helps the girl write the number 21 or any moment in the video you think you can analyze well.
3. Now you are ready to outline your paper which will have two major sections, one for each theory and learning moment you are going to analyze.
Paper structureI. Introduction paragraph. Introduce the topic of the paper (learning and cognitive development) and why it is important. You can also give a bit of information about the broad premise that you will analyze learning moments with the two theories.
II. First learning moment analysis using constructivism. In a few sentences, describe the learning moment you will analyze (remember I’ve seen the video, so you don’t need to be too detailed – just detailed enough that it is clear). Then, introduce and explain the theory of constructivism. Finally, analyze the learning moment using constructivism. Analysis means you will take apart the learning moment and show how the theory explains the child or children’s learning.
III. Second learning moment analysis using sociocultural learning theory. In a few sentences, describe the learning moment you will analyze (remember I’ve seen the video, so you don’t need to be too detailed). Then, introduce and explain sociocultural learning theory. Finally, analyze the learning moment using that sociocultural learning theory. Analysis means you will take apart the learning moment and show how the theory explains the child or children’s learning.
IV. Conclusion paragraph. Evaluate how applying these theories of learning/cognitive development to real learning moments helps deepen your understanding of children’s learning and development more generally (in your life, your current work, or your future work with children).
