Luke 22:20
His sacrifice counted so much that God requires only it. Like the blood of the Paschal Lamb on the doorpost allowing the Angel of Death to pass over the firstborn of the Israelites in Egypt, the blood of Jesus the Christ allows God to pass over us in judgment. And so we draw near to God based on Jesus’ sacrifice. We don’t have to make any other sacrifice to approach God.Christians draw near to God through a vicarious identification and personal association with Jesus and His perfect life here on earth. Christians draw near to God through faith in His perfect effort at living a sinless life. For us, His Sacrifice—not ours—counts in bringing us close to God. When Jesus said, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood” (Lk 22:20), He lay for those under the New Covenant the foundation for drawing near to God. We read that the veil separating the Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom when Christ died on the cross, a real-life metaphor for the openness He created to God by His sacrifice (Mt 27:51). By His one sacrifice, those under the New Covenant draw near to YHVH.The New Testament gives the uniquely important message that God made the ultimate sacrifice for humankind, allowing all, who choose, to draw near to God, to be adopted into the Family of God. The God of Moses, through Moses, left humanity the Torah, the teaching of the need to generally draw near to God through sacrifice. The New Testament reveals how to draw near to the God of Moses through Jesus and be saved from spiritual death by His blood, the blood of the ultimate Paschal Lamb. Jesus was publicly declared “not guilty” by the reigning, imperial government at the time (Lk 23:4). Even so, on the cross, He then exchanged His sinless self (1 Pet 2:22) for the sin of humanity (2 Cor 5:21). Your part is to accept His offer of adoption into the Family of God. Have you done that? If not, will you do that now? God wants you!
