Prompt
Compose a 5-page personal essay about a formative encounter with a work of art, a cultural text, or an aesthetic production. For this assignment, you are encouraged to think of terms like art, culture, text, and aesthetics as broadly as possible (Alexie downloadwrites about Superman; Anzaldúa downloadwrites about movies, music, and food).
Evaluation
Your essay will be peer-reviewed by a classmate and graded by me. Both readers will use the tools of “critical reading” and “rhetorical analysis” (from Moser, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 in the Week 1 Module) when evaluating your essay. As such, you should consider your essay’s rhetorical situation and the balance of your rhetorical appeals as you brainstorm and draft your paper. This essay is worth 10% of your final grade.
Peer Review
After the due date has passed, each student will be randomly assigned a colleague’s essay for peer review. This peer review is worth 5% of your final grade. Reviewers should annotate the essay you are provided using the critical reading strategies discussed in the Week 1 Module and answer the following questions about your classmate’s essay:
1) Using the information and steps outlined in Moser, Chapter 2, identify the rhetorical situation in the text based off of the following components: the communicator, the issue at hand, the purpose, the medium of delivery, and the intended audience.
2) Then, identify and analyze how the writer tries to establish the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, logos, and Kairos throughout that text.
3) Finally, evaluate how effectively you think the writer establishes the rhetorical appeals, and defend your evaluation by noting specific examples that you’ve annotated.
For full credit, peer reviews must be completed by Wednesday, July 14.
