Punnett Squares and Dominance/recessiveness: Homozygous crossNo unread replies. No replies. While there are many more than 1 set of genes involved in eye color, we will use eye color for this practice assignment.
First you do a table (click Insert above on the text box toolbar and choose table; make the table 2X 2 (it works better if you center the table so try to do that…select the whole table and then click on the alignment button)

Father – Brown Eyes – Homozygous

Mother
Blue Eyes
Homozygous

It’s hard to get mother where she properly belongs – to the side of the “square” so don’t worry about that. Your task is to take my post (you can copy and paste what I have so far if you need to) and add:
1. Father and mother’s genotype (using big B’s and little b’s as shown in your text). Put their genotype code underneath where I put their eye color.
2. Fill in the box with the possible combinations using these two parents. (Use only B and b, obviously)
3. Put the eye color for each of these statistically possible offspring under those letters.
4. State the resulting ratios:
genotype (how many different genotypes are in the box? This is usually written as a ratio such as 1:1 or 3: 1, etc) but you can also use percentages if that makes more sense to you.
phenotype (how many different phenotypes are in the box?)
I realize this is hard – after you’ve posted, you will be able to see how others did it. This is in high school (and middle school) biology and I know some of you remember it and can do it!
(It’s hard – but it’s also pre-college science, which I realize not every got – feel free to go to youtube and search for more tutorials – it’s really interesting)
It is introduced in 8th grade biology in California and it is a core of high school biology as well. After you post, you can come back to the thread, look at what others have done, assess its accuracy and, perhaps, correct your own work (via edit – as long as it’s before the due date).
You’ll need to reference this thread to do the other assignment on a heterozygous cross.
