Purpose: To perform an in-depth, rhetorical comparison of two similar texts: essays, articles, ads, photos, posters, blog posts, commercials, movie trailers, or TV series trailers. (Choose one.)

Overview:

Part 1:

Considering factors such as ethos, logos, and pathos, word choice, and tone (etc.), analyze the choices the creator(s) made for their original audiences. Are the texts effective for their intended audiences? Why or why not? How do the texts compare? In which aspects is one text more effective than the other?

Part 2:

Considering your own reaction (based on your experiences, values, knowledge, etc.), analyze the texts’ effectiveness on you. Answer these or related questions: How well do the texts work (or fail to work) on you personally? Why? Give specifics. (For example, perhaps the text includes a dog, and you’re a dog-lover.) Optional question: Given the chance, how would you rewrite the text to make it even more effective? (Be specific.)
