The writing prompt for Paper # 2 centers around images as arguments.
First, re-read  Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing…, Chapter 4, “Visual Rhetoric:  Images as Arguments.”
Second, select three (3) advertisements or images to evaluate and analyze.
When you are looking for images on the Internet, you need to understand that there is a difference between just viewing those images and using them for the analytical writing assignment required of Paper # 2. Luckily, there are many great sites with images that are offered free for anyone to use.
What follows are some of the best free use sites or you may find our own images, too, but these are great resources:
Wikimedia Commons (Links to an external site.): images are available for free use and don’t have copyright. Moreover, they have a lot of interesting historical images and famous pictures and art which can really make your visual essay unique. The link lands you on the “Topic” page, but you can also use the search engine to find photos.
Flickr: (Links to an external site.) includes many categories of photos, including “The Commons” which are photos uploaded from collections, as well as personal photos uploaded by people around the world.
Open Clip Art: (Links to an external site.) a gallery of graphics clip art that is free to use. You can search for many objects here that can help you convey your story. It also includes humorous images and cartoons.
Pixabay: (Links to an external site.) professional photography images that are often quite stunning. These free use images can be explored by topic, by the photographer, or by searching for a term. This site also includes clip art.
Slideshare: (Links to an external site.) contains many PowerPoint presentations on lots of different topics. You can get ideas for your own essay as well as look for graphics and quotes you could use. This site gets many uploads from companies, professors, and businesses, so it is a great resource for charts and graphs.
Pikwizard: (Links to an external site.) offers a variety of high-quality photos that you can use for personal and commercial use. It also includes a Design Wizard feature which allows you to add text, shapes, video, and other elements. Some features and add-ons are free and others require a small fee.
Next, use the following checklist to analyze images:
Who is the audience for the image?
What is the argument?
Does the text make a rational appeal (logos)? Explain why or why not.
Does the image appeal to the emotions (pathos)? Explain why or why not.
Does the image make an ethical appeal? Explain why or why not.
Best-and-final drafts are expected to be  a minimum of 1000 words, but no more than 1250 words (excluding Works Cited); include word count. Answer every question posed in the checklist.  Images should be included in the body of your paper, or they can be a part of an appendix, too. Cite all sources (images are sources, too).  Follow the rules of MLA.   Please review MLA style guidelines; a link to the OWL at Purdue is available in “Modules.” Adhere to the conventions of college-level, academic composition.
Students are expected to submit SEVERAL evolved rough draft to Smarthinking. However, best-and-final drafts (the draft I read and score) are due before Monday, July 12, 2021. A direct submission link for Paper # 2 will be available in Modules.  Submit early.
