1. If you have gone through the PowerPoint already, you might have noticed that modern art and music are a bit “different.” For your final discussion assignment, I want you to consider the art of Jackson Pollock. Look at Pollock’s abstract expressionist paintings (Google Pollock’s “drip paintings” if you need direction). In your opinion, is this art? Why or why not? Tell me specifically which painting(s) you looked at.For the second half of the assignment, I want you to listen to an example of minimalist music. Go on YouTube and listen to pieces like Steve Reich’s “Come Out” or “Different Trains,” Philip Glass’ “Einstein on the Beach,” Terry Riley’s “In C,” or John Adams’ “Short Ride in a Fast Machine.” Answer the same questions–is this music? Why or why not?To receive full credit, you must discuss both art and music. Minimum length of submission is 200 words.
2. We have made it to the final assignment set! Most of the art, literature, and music we examined this semester was either European or American. But there are many countries with rich musical traditions all over the globe. Their art and music is referred to as “non-western.” For our final research assignment I would like for you to pick a non-western society such as India, Africa, China, or Japan. Give me an overview of that country’s art and/or music history. What types of art or music are they known for? What does their art and/or music look/sound like today? How did it change over the centuries? As always, make sure to cite your sources and paraphrase your material. Minimum length of submission is 300 words.
