Objective:

COM-320-02 Assess the role and significance of cultural and individual meaning, the audience, and ethics in the creation and study of media.

Write a 2-3 page, double-spaced research paper [excluding citations].

Compare the culture sections of any of the news agencies listed below [or any other news agencies]. However, you cannot choose two from the same country. You may choose one aspect of the culture section, eg. fashion and lifestyle, entertainment [movies, music], food, beauty tips, health and fitness etc.

Compare their coverage of culture by asking:

What do these news agencies consider culture?

Are there different values?

Compare content, structure, channel, and style.

Evaluate their messages for sound arguments and effective strategy.

If you find coverage of the same event, what are the differences in the coverage of the same event?

How does the writer’s intended audience influence the coverage?

Were any of them biased towards one point of view? If so, why or why not? What is your evidence that it was biased or not biased?

What seemed important to them? What did they focus/not focus on?

What informs their coverage? Globalization? National identity? Patriotism? Nationalism?

Who do you think did a better job at portraying their culture? Why?
