In this week’s slides/notes you read that obesity is considered to be as dangerous to health as smoking. With
smoking, we’ve passed laws to ban smoking in public places, restricted the advertising of tobacco products,
raised taxes on cigarettes, and required manufacturers to put warning labels on cigarette packaging. We took
these public health steps to reduce smoking and, as a result, the rate has been cut in half in the US.
Question: If obesity is just as dangerous as smoking, what should we be doing as a nation to address the
problem beyond just encouraging individuals to eat healthier foods and exercise more? What could we learn
from our success with the smoking problem?
