or your final assessment in this class, you must choose one of the topics below and write an essay, using MLA guidelines for format and citations. All essays must be at least 1000 words, have at least one (1) credible outside source (maximum of 3) for support and a Work Cited page in proper MLA format. These topics ask that you engage in critical thinking and that you show, through inquiry, how you formulate reasons and weigh evidence in your decision-making.
Final Exam Topics:
Making an Argument: Review the various ways Robyn Martin supports her low-key and very specific thesis in “Stop the Rock-stacking” on page 92. Then write an argument that provides support for a claim or issue that readers may not have considered important. Like Martin, be sure to take time to explain the issue you are addressing and then defend your thesis with ample evidence.
Evaluation: Review Emily Nussbaum’s “To Stir, With Love” on page 695 and consider how she presents her criteria, makes comparisons, and uses metaphors and similes to evaluate cooking shows. Then, write your own evaluation of a television/streaming show, paying attention to how it fits into a popular “genre” or type of show. Be sure to explain how the show follows the specific genre rules or how it breaks them. What do you think is the intended impact on the audience? Are there any genre rules that the show has created, and other shows now follow? Your evaluation should have at least 3-5 clearly defined criteria for the genre of discussion.
Proposal: For this option, reread Kembrew McLeod’s “A Modest Free Proposal for Education Reform” on page 740. Because this is a satirical proposal, McLeod doesn’t expect readers to follow through on his suggestions. Try to imagine real solutions to the problems he addresses and write a serious proposal for change that would improve education in the United States. Be sure to reflect on your own education and consider your own experience as an adult student to help support the solution(s).
Procedure for Taking Your Exam:
Choose one of the three options from above.
Use the prewriting strategies to help you develop your own ideas and create a draft about your own subject based on the option you choose from the list above.
Type your essay into a Word Document using MLA format and guidelines. The document should include a heading, original title, and pagination. Your introduction should start with an attention getter and end with a thesis statement that follows one of the formulas you learned this semester.
Be sure to use at least one credible academic source as supporting evidence and include an MLA Works Cited page for that source (you can have up to 3).
Upload your final draft to Turnitin.com (Links to an external site.) by the due date in Canvas.
