Reflection 1

One of the ways we improve as writers is to reflect on what we’ve done, what we did well, and where we want to go. In this letter, I’d like to hear about writing your first paper. You don’t need to address the letter to me or sign it, but you can also do that if you want to.

This is not a teacher-pleasing letter. I don’t want you to say certain things or compliment me or the class. What I want you to do is get in the habit of thinking about your writing–doing so won’t just help you in this class but also in future classes and your profession. Reflecting on our writing–and being honest about it–helps us become better writers, students, and thinkers.

The voice is up to you. Even though you’re writing to me, a formal academic voice might not be the voice you want (and if it is, that’s ok too—it’s all up to you.) You also don’t have to be completely serious—humor or casual writing (albeit proofread) is ok with me. Just aim to sound like the persona you feel most comfortable with.

Your letter/reflection needs to answer the following questions. Please don’t include each question as a header: instead, write this more like a letter/reflection. Each paragraph should stick to a topic, and you should try to use some examples from your proposal.

  1. What was your experience like overall? Was it uncomfortable, surprising, etc.?
  2. What did you feel you did well? Which skills do you feel you learned or that you improved upon?
  3. What are your goals for the next paper? What would you like to improve upon?
  4. What did you discover through the drafting process? This can include workshops or revisions or both.
  5. Which skills can you use in future classes, the workplace, or anywhere else?

After you’ve drafted this, think about whether it matches your paper. Does the paper do what this letter says it does? If not, then you can use this draft to revise the paper.

Formatting

  • 750 words at least. You can also go over if you want.
  • Double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-pt. font
  • One-inch margins all around
  • Your name won’t be on the top of the paper. Canvas shows me who you are and which section you’re in.
