The
women that we are considering this week represent the spectrum of Second Wave
feminists, and in some senses, the Third Wave. They ‘take on’ the idea of ‘the male
gaze’ – the idea that we view the world from the male perspective. They seek to
find an identity that is distinctly their own, not one constructed from social
pressure and expectation. Or, conversely, they take on the idea the
sexualization of perspective completely, attempting to make their art
‘genderless’.
Using
examples from your required sources (see below), consider ‘identity’. As with
intersetionality, it has many components: race, ethnicity, class, et cetera. Is
it possible to consciously ‘remove’ gender from the way we see the world? Is it
more ‘equal’ to produce art from more gender perspectives or to try to erase
gender from it completely? Or would that erase a part of who and what we are,
denying us our individuality?
Remember
that your critical thinking grade is based on incorporating a multimedia piece
into your discussion, one that supports your ideas.
Be sure to support your ideas with examples from the required
readings and videos for the week – each of them. As always, citation is
mandatory, both internally and with the Works Cited. Please review APA style.
